Imphal: Irom Sharmila along with her political team Peoples Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA)launched #Ten4Change campaign online through Asias largest a crowd-funding platform (www.ketto.org/fundraiser/prja)
PRJA is the first political party in Manipur to seek funding through online crowd-funding format. In that sense, this is surely a pioneering endeavor. PRJA Convener Erendro Leichombam, Irom Sharmila Chanu, James Mayengbam, Najima Bibi, Bowang Kho, Md. Iliyash Khan and other party leaders attended the launch event. Addressing the conference, Erendro remarked: Instead of relying on powerful lobbies and interest groups for political funding, PRJA is going back directly to the people to empower our movement.
To bring a fundamental transformation in our politics, the source of political funding needs a complete revolution; any force that envisions empowering the micham praja, the peoples, needs to be without any financial pressure or influence from vested corporate interest groups, or contractors. As is true for democracy, political parties funding should also be for the people, of the people, and by the people. Crowd-funding our campaign is an innovative model to restore democratic spirit in Manipur, which hitherto has been lacking. This is one of the cleanest and powerful ways to do away with corruption from Manipurs political culture.
PRJA party secretary James Mayengbam said that this crowd-funding campaign is also a symbolic one. In addition to the people funding it financially, it shows the peoples participation and engagement with their own cause. A movement for social change which destroys the notion that elections can be won with money power is gradually resonating with the youth.
Irom Sharmila said,PRJAs initiative is a step forward in laying a strong foundation for democracy in regional politics. True leaders and the people who believe in them cannot be bought with money and muscle power. Our party has young and competent leaders who would sincerely work for the betterment of Manipur. Each individual has a big role in shaping the destiny of our land, and the youth should actively participate in this movement for change. PRJA aims to empower the people of Manipur, and this is the first step in seeking their participation.
Najima Bibi emphasized the step-motherly treatment meted out to the people of Manipur and the northeast, and the regional issues which the established political parties have failed to solve. She also said that PRJA stands for justice and for change, and it is ultimately the people who have the power to change their future.
Bowang Kho highlighted the difference between PRJA and other political parties as with PRJA all stakeholders and peoples have an equal say. He said We are very confident that though we have very small number of candidates, we will win. PRJA also appealed the praja as well as the political parties not to indulge in vote buying.
