signed the ‘Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement’on 4th may 2021.this agreement aimed  support people to live and work in both countries . while addressing long-standing problems of illegal migration from India to the UK.

The agreement enhances and accelerates the process to return Indian nationals who have no legal right to stay in the UK and vice versa, and promotes greater inter-country cooperation on immigration crime .The partnership agreement marks the first bilateral relationship between the UK and another country on immigration since the government’s new points-based system came into force at the start of this year..

The living bridge between India and UK will get stronger as a result,” Jaishankar tweeted.

United Kingdom Home Minister Preeti Patel  said ,We signed the landmark Migration & Mobility deal as part of our New Plan for Immigration, providing new opportunities for our young people to live and work here and in India as we recover from the pandemic.

MEMORUNDAM OF UNDERSTANDING (MoU) includes a pledge to encourage regular short stays of nationals in each country who “actively and sustainably contribute to the vitality of bilateral relations”

According to uk home office the new agreement will lead to bespoke route for young professionals aged 18-30 yrs from either country to work and live in the other country for upto 24 months under a professional and cultural exchange programme.

While the UK maintains around 100,000 Indians are living illegally in the country, India has questioned the veracity of those numbers in the past because that figure is believed to also cover nationals from other parts of the Indian subcontinent. The two sides were close to signing an agreement on the issue in 2018 before it fell through over this ambiguity

On other hand illegal migration, the new Partnership will ensure swifter and more efficient returns by accelerating timescales for removal ,by committing appropriate resources to facilitate returns ,and steps to make it easier for indian nationals to be identified and returned .
The issues of illegal indian migrants in the uk has long been on agenda of bilateral negotiations with both sides.
