Avnish Goyal is the co-founder and Chair of Hallmark Care Homes, one of the most respected companies in UK healthcare, and the founder of the Hemraj Goyal Foundation. He is the Chair of Care England and a celebrated philanthropist, acting as Trustee and Patron of a wide range of charities and philanthropic organisations. Avnish is driven by the desire to make a difference in the world and help marginalised people and communities get access to the support and resources they need.
Avnish was born in Moga Punjab but moved with his family to England when he was four years old. His family arrived in the UK with very little and they experienced the financial hardships and racism faced by many immigrant families in the ‘70s. Money was tight with eight children in the family, but Avnish was able to go to university and he studied for a degree in Accounting and Finance at Newcastle University.
After graduation, Avnish accepted a job at one of the largest accountancy practices in the UK – the firm which is now PriceWaterhouseCoopers – and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1991. However, Avnish’s desire to create something of his own led him to eventually leave accountancy and join his family’s business, spearheading the development of a property portfolio of residential and commercial properties.
Despite finding success in the worlds of finance and property, Avnish knew he wanted to make a tangible, lasting difference and this led him to acquire his first care home in 1997. This first home in South Wales was swiftly joined by many more and Hallmark Care Homes soon became one of the most widely renowned care home companies in the UK. Under Avnish’s direction, Hallmark Care Homes has set the standard for high quality, relationship-centred care and its innovative work has been recognised by over 100 awards. The company employs over 2,000 people and runs 20 care homes in England and Wales. Avnish continues to seek new ways to serve older people and is currently developing a series of new retirement villages under the brand Santhem Residences. The villages are being built through the construction arm Savista Developments.
Avnish is married to Anita and is proud of his blended family of three grown up children. His son Anand is a first-class Astrophysics graduate who qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte and has now joined the family business. His daughter Simran S also works as part of the family business and holds a Master’s degree in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the London School of Economics. His other daughter Simran G is currently studying medicine at the University of Cambridge and will qualify as a doctor in 2021.
It was the financial difficulties of his childhood and the inspiration of his parents that led Avnish to create the Hemraj Goyal Foundation, in honour of his late father. The Foundation works with over 30 charities and philanthropic organisations each year to support crucial social change and help those who find themselves in extremely difficult circumstances.
Together with his wife Anita, Avnish is also an ambassador of the Alzheimer’s Society and works to help break the taboos around dementia within the Asian community. Avnish and Anita have donated over a million pounds to charity over the last few years and are also expert fundraisers. They have raised almost £350,000 for charities such as the Care Workers Charity – an organisation co-founded by Avnish himself – which to date has distributed over £2 million to care workers who face financial hardship. In recognition of their work in philanthropy and education, Avnish and Anita have repeatedly been named one of the top 100 Asian Power Couples in the UK.
In addition to his charity work, Avnish is dedicated to improving the social care sector and helping transform the way care is provided. He is the Chair of Care England, the largest representative body for the care sector, and through this organisation he oversees the collaboration of 22,000 care homes, representing 450,000 residents. Care England works to raise the public profile of the social care sector, ensure regulation is fair and proportionate and facilitate joint action to raise industry standards. Avnish is also the Chairman  of Championing Social Care, an initiative created to enhance the public profile of the care sector and back transformative new initiatives and facilitate fundraising.
Avnish’s wealth of experience and long list of accolades has meant he is a highly sought-after speaker. He regularly leads seminars and workshops on subjects ranging from entrepreneurship, goal-setting and workplace culture to personal development, empowerment and relationships.
Avnish is a committed believer in ‘paying it forward’ and it is this philosophy that has shaped his outreach and career. He credits his parents, Santosh and Hemraj, for impressing upon him the importance of industry, integrity and respect and for inspiring his love of life-long learning.
