Mumbai: Baisakhi is a festival of harvest for Punjabis.It marks the first day of the Hindu New Year for the Sikh Community.Baisakhi is also a significant day for the Sikh community. This year, Baisakhi falls on April 13.
Mumbai: World Punjabi Organisation under the aegis of Sdr Satinder Pal Singh Ahuja – President & Sdr Timmy Mehta – Chairman are into the celebration of Baisakhi in an unique way this year.
At the outset plans were afoot for WPO to celebrate Baisakhi on a massive scale in roping popular singers from Punjab. Singer Navraaj Singh and Bollywood fame Mikka Singh were supposed to perform on the auspicious occasion.
However, in the outbreak of the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic and the lockdown imposed in the city of Mumbai and with the entire country and the people in general facing severe hardships in getting their daily two-square meals, WPO has decided to celebrate Baisakhi in somewhat subdued manner.
Accordingly, WPO geared-up its team of members and initiated the task of distributing ration to the underprivileged in various localities.
Sdr. Pritam Singhji took up the responsibility of procuring ration at his warehouse and having them repacked into smaller packets and getting it transported to various areas for distribution. Each packet contained Rice, Sugar, Oil, Daal & other groceries.
At Western Suburb Bandra and Khar, President Sdr Satinder Pal Singh Ahuja joined by his family members took up the responsibility to distribute these ration packets to the needy.
In Andheri West, Sdr Timmy Mehta alongwith singer Mikka Singh distributed ration packets in the slums and Shri Ashok Grover distributed ration at Andheri east.
Sdr S S Bright through his contacts arranged to send these ration packets to Panvel and Khalapur and through the local Panchayats got the same distributed to the needy in the area.
