In a fresh development related to the Angadia extortion case, the Crime branch of the Mumbai Police has held Deputy Commissioner of Police Saurabh Tripathi, as the prime accused. The case was registered at LT Marg police station last month.

Reportedly, the Angadia Association levelled allegations that the accused officers allegedly detained some Angadias on four different occasions in December 2021 and allegedly extorted money from them.

The case is being investigated Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai crime branch. Three officers have been arrested – Police Inspector Om Wangate, Assistant Police Inspector Nitin Kadam, and Police Sub-Inspector Samadhan Jamdade. Kadam and Jamdade are in judicial custody. Wangate, who was arrested on March 10, was produced in court on Tuesday, which extended his police custody till March 19.

DCP Tripathi’s name cropped up as an accused after the key accused, Wangate, during interrogation allegedly revealed his name saying that he was acting on Tripathi’s verbal directions.

After the FIR was registered at the LT Marg Police Station against the Police Officers, DCP Tripathi reported sick leave and has gone incommunicado.
