Priyanka’s first Goa tour, Congress claims to resume mining :
Congress leader and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi is going to visit Goa for the first time on December 10. During this one-day visit, Priyanka Gandhi will visit the building which was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi herself in 1972. Announcing Priyanka’s visit, the former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that, resumption of mining in Goa is an important issue, and the current BJP government has failed on this front. He said that Rahul Gandhi had also supported the resumption of mining during his visit, and if the central government brings a bill for this in Parliament, Congress will support it.

It is worth noting that only yesterday, 21 sarpanches of Goa had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi talking about saving their livelihood, and now Congress has openly supported the resumption of mining. Meanwhile, after the cabinet meeting today, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the government will auction 8 mines soon, but Congress is demanding that the mines which were already in function should be resumed immediately so that the people can get employment.

On December 10, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi will start her election campaign in Goa. While making this announcement, Goa Congress chief and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that during this visit, Priyanka Gandhi will also meet all those people who were deprived of justice from the BJP government of the state. While responding to the letter written by 21 sarpanches of Goa to the Prime Minister for the resumption of mining in Goa, Kamat said that this government has completely failed to solve the problems of the people belonging to the mining belt. Reminding about the announcement made by Congress President Rahul Gandhi he said, “We want mining to resume in Goa at the earliest. If the BJP government at the Centre brings any kind of bill for the same in the Parliament, Congress will fully support it”.

It is to be cognized that there’s been a complete ban on mining in Goa since 2018. It contributes the most to Goa’s economy after tourism. Due to this ban, the livelihood of about 4 lakh people dependent on it has been affected. Recently, 21 sarpanches of Goa have written a letter to Prime Minister Modi requesting to resume mining in Goa. In this letter, they’ve written that in 2013 Goa nominated the Prime Minister as the candidate of BJP, and now the Prime Minister should resume mining in Goa as a return gift.

Mining is a major and burning issue in Goa, and this is the reason why every party is trying to capitalize on it. The Aam Aadmi Party had made this announcement recently that if it comes to power, it will resume mining within 6 months. The BJP government of the state has also assured that it is forming a corporation, and after the auctions of 6-8 mining blocks, mining will resume soon in the state.

The Congress and the BJP have been face-to-face in Goa for many years over mining. In 2012, the then Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar had accused the Congress of looting 35000 crores and tried to rail it in. However, after coming to power, he admitted that the amount was not more than Rs 300 crore.

Priyanka Gandhi’s visit on December 10 will decide the future political direction of the Congress in Goa.
