Brief Introduction To Gopal Jhaveri

Gopal Jhaveri’s name needs no introduction. He is popularly known as the River Man of Mumbai, and he will be contesting the Municipal Elections 2022 on behalf of the AAP in Mumbai from Ward 13. Gopal Jhaveri has been a champion of the cause of sustainable development, and maintaining the ecological balance of Mumbai – a city that is gifted with vast natural infrastructure: the sea, rivers, wetlands, lakes, mangroves, and urban forests. However, due to the indiscriminate encroachments by citizens and government authorities alike, Mumbai is very precariously poised today. As the Ward President of War 13, and a candidate in the BMC 2022 elections – Gopal Jhaveri seeks to change this.

Gopal has had a decorated career in the corporate and the social sector; with several graduate qualifications in mathematics, engineering, and law under his name. He is working as the Director of an architectural planning and engineering company since 1991, and is also the Co-founder of Mumbai March – an NGO that has been advocating for developmental and environmental causes for over a decade now. Gopal Jhaveri was also bestowed the title ‘Mumbai’s Hero’ in 2017, for his activism in the sphere of development and environment sustainability – including the congestion of the Dahisar toll naka, pollution of Mumbai’s rivers, and the pathetic state of civic infrastructure such as roads and drainage in Mumbai. “The agenda with which I wish to contest the BMC 2022 elections comprises of honesty, accountable governance, and sustainability. Mumbai as a city needs to address growing problems like wealth inequality, environmental degradation, and the shortage of basic civic amenities like toilets and roads. This needs to change, and I believe that the AAP is the key to solving the issues that we Mumbaikars face.” says Gopal Jhaveri.

When we spoke with him about his decision to join AAP, Gopal said, “The Aam Aadmi Party Mumbai has been committed to the cause of protecting the environment of Mumbai, and were the pioneers of the #SaveAarey movement. We share common goals, and a common vision for Mumbai’s future. When I look back upon my life, I feel that I share a very deep attachment to the issues of the people of Mumbai. I studied in a municipal school, did my graduation from Mumbai, and have been working to solve issues faced by Mumbaikars for decades.”

Gopal believes that AAP has the motivation and intent necessary to work for people’s needs. “Arvind Kejriwal’s vision of clean politics resonates with us all, because we are tired of struggling under a regime of corruption and incompetency. Mumbai’s politicians and administration have failed us; we have been hearing promises for 3 decades, but nothing ever happens on the ground. It is time for us to stand with the AAP, a political party that has delivered results, and works for the betterment of people.”
