Mumbai: Mira-Bhayandar Corporator, Arvind Shetty, says India’s economy will be on stake if migrant labourers fail to return to their work places to Hello Mumbai News Team.

Mumbai: India is on the verge of an unprecedented economic catastrophe as the humanitarian disaster from the Covid-19 pandemic unfolds.

The disruption of Covid-19 pandemic is much starker than the global financial crisis of 2008, which hit the Indian financial sector and real demand, but did not bring production to a halt. Besides, at the time, the Indian economy was much better placed to handle the crisis, as it had been growing rapidly in the years.

By contrast, the Covid-19 crisis comes at a time when GDP growth is slowing. It is poised to fall off a cliff.

Speaking to Hello Mumbai News Team, Arvind claimed that with the lockdown getting extended longer and the state governments failing to provide securities to the labourers and workers; thousands of migrants took to highways and rail tracks to reach their home state.

Continuing, he said, abcence of the labourers and workers, will impact to a large extent on realty sector as the Builders throughout the country won’t have labourers and workers to work at the construct sites.

Likewise, the Hotel industry will also be drastically affected in the absence of its regular staff to work in their restaurants.

While sharing his views on the Unlock 1.0 which has just commenced nationwide, he believes that it is a bizzare decision taken by the government.

Nevertheless, they were beyond their sustainable capacity to handle the ongoing crisis as a result of which they had to take this unusual decision of opening the lockdown. He also added that people should not take this Unlock lockdown for granted. Instead, they will have to take much more precautionary measures if they want to be infection free.

He also affirmed that as a corporator he has so far distributed ration to a total of 250 families for 1 month and has taken the work of sanitisation very seriously and has santized the entire ward.

He has also taken a philanthropic initiative by organising a medical camp which is still running successfully where there are professional doctors who check patients from different wards and recommend them medicines for the betterment of their health and to boost their immune system.
