In our Social Entrepreneur series today we are introducing you a very dynamic and popular Social Entrepreneur of Dharavi who is known  for her remarkable and outstanding performance in the field of Social Work who always believes in Women Empowerment. Yes we are talking about Manjula Kadirvel, she shared her Social journey with Hello Mumbainews.com Correspondent Janvi S. Panjwani.

Meet Advocate Manjula Kadirvel – AAP Mumbai’s Dharavi Ward President Ward No. 188 and candidate for the BMC Elections 2022 from Ward No. 188 in Dharavi.

Adv. Manjula has been a resident of Dharavi since 46 years and has intensely lived the Dharavi life.

She grew up experiencing her mother’s frustrations in tackling day to day issues like water, gutter, garbage related fights within the neighbourhood, etc.

She has witnessed the suffering of people around her, and has seen the attitude of the administration towards the people of Dharavi.

Setting aside personal tragedies, including the loss of her husband when her son was barely four, Manjula picked herself up, kick started life, completing her 10th standard at the age of 25, and then her 12th standard in two years.

After more struggles for a few years, this single mother decided to study law, and become a lawyer to serve the needs of her people.

After obtaining her law degree in 2013, from Rizvi Law College, Mumbai, Manjula’s practice took her deeper into the sufferings of the people of Dharavi.

Their sheer poverty drove them to make small mistakes, which had magnified impacts in their lives, because they could not afford legal representation.

Slowly Adv. Manjula’s practice lead her to the social activism path and she became a regular member of various organizations that were fighting for the rights of Dharavi.

Having seen how political parties had a huge, and unfortunately negative influence on the destiny of Dharavi, she realised that the big change would come about only through the political route.

Having witnessed first hand, the work of all other parties in Mumbai, and having seen and read about the work done by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, led to her eventually joining the Aam Aadmi Party in 2017.

Adv. Manjula is very committed to the cause of social justice and a minimum standard of life and dignity for all citizens, an ideology that fits perfectly with the thinking of the Aam Aadmi Party.

In furtherance of her goal of a better and liveable Dharavi, on being elected as the Corporator for her area, Adv. Manjula pledges to work towards the following reforms:

  • Smooth and well lit internal roads;
  • Sorting of hanging Electrical wires;
  • Repairs of leaking pipes that causing flooding in lanes;
  • Facilities for senior citizens, physically & mentally challenged individuals;
  • Replace dead Public Toilets with Community Halls for women, children tuitions, etc.;
  • Senior Citizen facilities in Toilets;
  • Clean, stink free toilets…
