Key Highlight of Service Project :

“It will never rain roses, when we want to have more roses, we must plant roses.”

“The beginning is always today.”

A mother teaches a child everything that she knows right from talking, walking to living a fulfilling life. She goes through the process of learning again to help her child gain better knowledge.

About 15 years ago, the members of Inner Wheel Club of Darjeeling was approached by a visionary, Mr. Santosh Kanoria, to start a unique Project which was later named as “Mother and Child” Project.

A soft spoken person by nature, he was connected with Darjeeling Tea for quite some time and he often visited the Tea Estates in and around Darjeeling. He also gave his expert comments to the planters.

In one of his visits to Darjeeling, he was invited by Mrs. Chitra Datta, a member of IWC Darjeeling for a cup of tea in Planter’s Club. He came with a proposal for members of the IW club to take over this Project where mothers from underprivileged background could get antenatal and postnatal care for a period of 6 months.  His initiation encouraged the members of the Inner wheel Club of Darjeeling to take over this “Mother and Child” Project for the betterment of their future.

IWC Darjeeling started this Project with the help of Hayden Hall Institute, a Jesuit NGO, which is famous now for its own good service in the field of social work, especially with women and children in and around Darjeeling.

So as the saying goes, “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”, we, the members of IWC of Darjeeling supported this project since then.

25 pregnant mothers, mainly from the rural areas, are sponsored annually for this Project.  Apart from pre-natal and postnatal care, they are given help in other forms like check-ups, weekly /monthly rations, supplementary medicines, talks on important issues like healthy diets, importance of breast feeding, relationship between mother and child, social issues, Government schemes for women and other related topics. This hard work has given rich dividend as most the babies born are healthy and strong.

Once the mothers are registered and brought under the wings of the project, they are taken care of for a period of 6 months as stated earlier. Regular check-ups are provided at the clinic run by Hayden Hall till delivery after which the newborn and the mother are looked after for a period of 6 months again. The pictures below are some of the events we had undertaken and sponsored their meals and gifted them useful things.

In 2020, members of IWC of Darjeeling visited Hayden Hall on 1st of December to hand over 25 blankets as Christmas gift to the 25 expectant mothers registered under the project but due to the pandemic, the mothers were advised not to be present in person. So, the blankets were handed to Sister Chunku (the now in charge of  Hayden Hall) so that they could be given to them at a later date.

Since this year there was some relaxation from the pandemic, we struck a date with Sister Chunku to physically visit and sponsor the lunch and tea for the 25 expectant mothers. It was a joyous occasion on 5th of August for the members of IWC of Darjeeling to take this opportunity to carry on with their Project with a lot of enthusiasm. We went there to meet the mothers who were sponsored under the Mother and Child Project, after a long time.

Sister Chunku, who is in –charge of the Project had indeed chalked out a very interesting programme for all. Since it was during the breastfeeding week too, topics like the importance of breastfeeding, prenatal and postnatal care, nutrients to be taken by them, all were highlighted by different social workers and teachers of the institute. They were all excellent in their deliberation as it benefitted all who were attending the function.

As it was planned earlier to celebrate Mother’s Day with them, gifts like shopping bags, pens, umbrellas and a packet of milk were presented to all the mothers by Inner Wheel members.

We as members also gave them tips in the local language there so that it could be helpful to the expectant mothers. A cheque of Rs. 72,000/- was handed over to Sister Chunku by the President for the period of 1st July, 2021 to 30th June, 2022.

The function ended with a delicious lunch sponsored by the club. The members present were also offered lunch by Sister Chunku.

We pray that God will give us the strength to carry on with this Project forever for the betterment of women and their health. One step taken can inspire others for many more projects like this. The vital stage of women during their prenatal and postnatal care if monitored well can give the nation bright and healthy children. So as the quote goes “The bond between a mother and her child is the only real and purest bond in the world, the only true love we can ever find in our lifetime.”
