Mumbai: Dubai based Liesa Euton shares her lockdown experience, her social work and charity amid the Lockdown in Dubai with Aleem Shaikh Editor-In-Chief, Hello Mumbai News

Aleem Shaikh: Hi, Liesa ji Welcome to Hello Mumbai News. Hope you are safe and sound and doing fine.
My first Question to you is to please share your lockdown experience in Dubai, and how did you go through the difficulties and challenges.

Liesa Euton : Personally, the Lockdown experience has been fine. I already work from home, so there wasn’t not a major change. The social life changed as Dubai is a very social city and the events stretch for six days a week. The lockdown period actually gave me more time to meditate, zoom with family and friends. Infact I got to know my neighbours a little bit better.

I feel that UAE handled the pandemic situation very well. It has come to light that Dubai is ranked among one of the top 10 in the world for the manner in which the entire Lockdown was handled.
I commend the UAE Health Sector for their diligence and hard work.

Aleem Shaikh: Please highlight something about your charity and social work carried out by you amid lovkdown.

Liesa Euton : “ I feel elated to be a Rotarian since last 26 years. Infact it was my wish when I was 18 years old, to serve in Rotary. My parents are the same. I have always seen them helping others. I went to a Rotary event when I was 18yrs old while on vacation in my mom’s home St.Maarten ( Dutch West Indies). I was amazed to see so many people assembled. I moved from NY to St. Maarten at the age of 25 after Graduate School to start my career . Two years later someone approached me as I was very active in the community and asked me would I be interested in Rotary. A bit serendipitous There was my intention coming to reality. I always say put the intention out and let the universe take over.

Amid the Lockdown our Rotary Clubs did several. projects. We helped to feed Labourers, in collaboration with CR Hope Foundation, We worked with Community Development Authority and General Mills to feed Senior Citizens and my RotaryClub ( Jumeirah, Dubai) has adopted the last 11 years SENSES Center for Children with Special Needs. so we were able to collaborate with a clothing department store and buy beautiful outfits for the Children for Eid. as Ramadan was during lockdown and the Children remained in the Center There are some other acts of goodwill I did during lockdown that are close to my heart but personal, so if its ok

I’ll keep it that way. I always feel we are here on this earth to help and support each other. I am looking for nothing else but a front row seat when I get to Heaven. I don’t want to sit in the back.row.. What you put out in energy will always come back to you. I just want to do my part. I think we all feel better when we help in some way”,

Aleem Shaikh: Being a Bussiness woman Entreprenuer how you look at the future of Economy in UAE post lockdown?

Dubai is known for its flexibility and resilience and investors would remember these attributes when making future investment decisions. Dubai is putting a post-corona plan together and will modify its strategy. The Emirate has dealt with the crisis in stages and initially they focused on keeping a tag on prices.

Retailers were warned not to hike the prices of food and essential items, including sanitisers. The markets were monitored and a cap was put on prices. Also precautionary measures are focused on at the same time.

The private sector has enjoyed a return to growth in June, June data showed as the country continued to relax measures designed to stop the spread of COVID-19, new business are rising at a solid pace, driving the first increase in output since last December.

Aleem Shaikh: We have studied your professional career, you have been into Hospaitality and Tourism Industry, you have vast experience in it. Could you please share your view how the industry will be affected post covid ?

Dubai has reopened to International tourists, in hope of a much-needed boost to the economy. Tourism accounts for 11.5% of Dubai’s gross domestic product.. I am very excited about this because tourism is a key pillar for Dubai. Dubai has been making sure that the public and visitors’ health and safety is of utmost importance.

I think we have to be realistic. What happened on a global scale, it’s not something any one of us would have imagined. As an Emirate we need to be optimistic in a growth surge and of course make sure that during this period of time… Dubai remains top of mind.

In an effort to achieve this, Dubai Tourism launched a series of marketing campaigns, one of which, from June, was called “We Will See You Soon” and promised to welcome visitors in the near future. Its latest rendition, “Ready When You Are,” is a showcase of Dubai’s most famous attractions and adrenaline-filled activities announcing that tourists are welcome once again.

Some major Hotel brands like Atlantis and Le Royal Meridien have seen bookings pick up after offering special discount packages to residents who want a luxurious staycation away from their homes.

Liesa Euton : There was no turning point, I have always been involved in Social causes, I got this from my parents. I still remember giving food and toys when we were younger to less fortunate. My parents instilled this in me as well as my brothers. It’s our social responsibility to help each other and our communities.
In 1998 with the assistance of the Government and the Department of Women’s Affairs in St. Maarten i was appointed President and opened Safe Haven Shelter for Women and Children of Domestic Violence in my 7 year tenure. My team and I were able to educate the public and private sector while housing and helping many Families. I also sat on HIV/Aids Committee and various other community based NGOs. I hosted a Sunday morning call in Radio Talk show for almost 17 years, so this was a great venue to discuss with the listening public many social issues and help find solutions.

Aleem Shaikh:
Liesa, any specific messege to all women during this tough time.

Liesa Euton: In times of a pandemic like the one we are facing now, women, who are the primary caregivers, are the most affected from nurses to mothers, it is a difficult period for women to navigate as they look out for others.

With countries taking rapid measures to contain the spread of the virus, and people going into self-quarantine and working from home, women as primary caregivers are ending up taking more responsibilities. Especially for working mothers, dealing with both work and responsibilities at home can take a toll on them, and they often forget to take care of themselves while looking after others. Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others. Love yourself enough to set boundaries. Your time and energy are precious. You get to choose how you use it. You teach people how to treat you by deciding what you will and won’t accept.”
Your health is your capital.”

Aleem Shaikh: Liesa, do you want to make a make any appeal to Goverenment for relaxtion to the Tourism and Hospatality industry?.

Liesa Euton :”I think Dubai has done an amazing Job and as I mentioned they have taken all precautionary measures. Dubai is fully committed to following all guidelines and measures to ensure a vacationer’s health remains top priority. From the moment they arrive at the airport to hotel check-in Dubai ensures everyone’s well being.

Aleem Shaikh: Liesa, Thank you so much for giving your precious and valuable time to us.

Liesa Euton : My Pleasure Aleem, it’s always nice to share and encourage . Thank you for the interview. Namaste!
