Muharram, which is the first month of of the Islamic calendar, is being observed with great reverence and respect by Muslims all over the world. Like every year the financial capital of India Mumbai also observing Muharram. Muslims with Taaziya processions taken out on the street of the city to remember the sacrifice of Hazarat Imam Hussain and Imam Hasan.
Alam and Taziya is very much old tradition in the Month of Muharram.
South Mumbai’s ancient and very much old red light Area known as ‘Kamatipura ‘ also observed this Muharram, Alam, Sabeel and Taziya, and waaz being organised here every year.
“We have been making these Alam for three generations and now we find proud and passionate about it, this tradition is going on since the time of British Government, kamatipura 11th lane is famous for this tradition festival, we install this Alam for three days only people from different places attend this Alam pray for them ,Kamatipura being a red light Area doesn’t matter all casts and different Community people from outsiders Also  visits this Alam and seek blessings, ” Said Arshad Shabuddin one of the organiser.
He further added, I and my family organising this Alam for the last 25 years, our entire family involved every year in organising this ,My colleague Aklesh Pandey ji always support me in organising, he arrange police permission and other things “,
Mumtaz Ahmed Iraqi one of the social activist also oldest residents of Kamatipura said ,we are watching this Alam for the last many years ,Telgue community people visit this Alam and seek blessings, among them local Sex workers were also who regularly visit this Alam and seek blessings, Devotees from Telgue community attend the procession, ”
Abdul Rauf, A Tailor by Profession, told ‘Hello Mumbai ” , This kamatipura 11th lane is famous for this Alam during the Month of Muharram, all kinds of people locals, Sex workers and outsiders come and seeks blessing from here, ”
Rasheed Bhai Local residents, such type of festival plays very important role to develop the unity between the two communities. In the same area Alam and Ganapati Pandal install same time but both festivals are going through smoothly. It’s a best example of Unity.
