Earthquake of 5.8 magnitude hits Uttarakhand, north India

A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5.8 on Richter scale, hit Uttarakhand last night, tremors of which were felt in Delhi and other parts of northern India. Epicentre of the quake was in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand. Tremors were felt in Delhi, Noida, Faridabad and Western UP as well. Director General of NDRF R K Pachnanda has said that a total of four teams of NDRF have been rushed to Uttarakhand to carry out rescue and relief work, if need be, in the aftermath of the earthquake that had its epicentre at Rudraprayag last night.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to officials and took stock of the situation in the wake of the earthquake felt in various parts of Northern India.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “PMO is in touch with officials in Uttarakhand, which is the epicentre of the quake. I pray for everyone’s safety & wellbeing.”

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also tweeted about NDRF teams being rushed to Uttarakhand to carry out rescue and relief operations, if need be.

In a tweet, Rajnath Singh said, “Ministry of Home Affairs is closely monitoring the situation in earthquake-hit Uttarakhand and other north Indian states where the tremors have been felt. The NDRF teams have been rushed from Ghaziabad to Uttarakhand to conduct rescue and relief operations, if the situation arises.”
