Mumbai: The MVA-led Uddhav Thackeray government on Thursday sanctioned a proposal for renaming Mumbai Central Railway Station as Nana Shankarseth Mumbai Central railway station.

The Maharashtra Government in the Maharashtra Assembly had put up a Proposal for renaming the Mumbai Central Railway Station.

Jagannath (Nana) Shankarseth was an industrialist and educationist in the early 19th Century. He was one of the first directors of India’s first railway company.

Jagannath was a Maharashtrian Philanthropist, Industrialist and Educationist and has contributed a lot to the development of Mumbai.

He was the first Indian to be nominated to erstwhile Legislative Council of Bombay, and was also instrumental in the formation of the Indian Railway.

Earlier the station was renamed from Bombay to Mumbai Central in 1997.
