ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY VERSOVA – A TRUE EPITOME OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF

As you all are aware, the world is going through a huge crisis on account of Covid – 19. Most of the countries remain unspared. India announced a Janta Curfew on 22 March 2020 and thereafter a 21-day lockdown in response to the spread of the deadly pandemic across the country.

On the night of Janta Curfew, the present President Mr. Shashi Chhachhia along with the President elect Mrs. Kalpana Jain and six other members of the Rotary Club of Mumbai Versova (RCMV) had a conference call to decide on a quick plan that can be executed by RCMV to help the people of Mumbai, fight against this pandemic.

The first thing that was proposed was the provision cum distribution of masks, sanitizers etc.Within a couple of days, they realised that apart from Covid-19, there was another challenge which was being faced by the weaker sections of our society, i.e., hunger/starvation of the homeless migrants, daily wage earners, beggars, sex workers etc.

The RCMV team reconnected via a conference call to decide on the ways and means that could be implemented to provide food to the needy. The first target was set out for providing 6,000 meals per day, i.e., 3,000 lunch and 3,000 dinner. Mr. Rajesh Chaudhary, a past president of RCMV and a Restaurateur by profession, immediately stepped in to set up a kitchen at Saffron Hospitality Services, Marol, Andheri (E),Mumbai. RCMV ensured that there was no compromise on the hygiene, quality of food, and the same was nourishing and fulfilling. The distribution was carried out in consultation with the BMC/MCGM authorities.

When the first target was being perceived as met, BMC authorities informed RCMV that the magnitude of the requirement was huge. In order to cater to the larger requirements, there was additional requirement of funds. That’s where, Rotary Club of Bombay and a few of other Rotary clubs stepped in and agreed to partner in for raising funds.

Presently, around 18,000 – 20,000 meals per day across 24 Municipal wards from Colaba to Dahisar, Chembur& Ghatkopar are being provided. The distribution is beingmagnificently handled by BMC authorities, ably supported by Oshiwara and Nagpada police stations and the volunteers from the Rotary family. So far more than 2,00,000 meals have been provided.  Every time a distressed call is received, RCMV ensures that the meals are provided to the requisite persons.

We understand from active members of RCMV that every person they speak to is willing to contribute, such is the goodwill of the Rotary Club. Further, one of the most heart touching contributions came from two watchmen of Rs. 501 each.  Special thanks to Rotary club of Bombay for being a pillar of strength in this noble cause.

As the lockdown is extended till 30th April, RC Mumbai Versova is committed to keep the project goingeven beyond 14th April in consultation with Rotary Club of Bombay and the BMC/MCGM authorities. Their target is to ensure that no Mumbaikar sleeps hungry because of this lockdown.

This Project is the brain child of past President  Rajesh Chaudhary, and is working hard day and night for strategically planning the distribution of the meals, in a meticulous manner to reach the needy without any wastage of food.

Past President Dharmesh, of RCMV in his interview on  Radio FM 107.10 has also appealed Mumbaikars to donate generously to the Rotary trust for this noble cause.  RCMV is appealing forfurther contributions to “Rotary Club of Bombay Versova Charitable Trust”. RCMV is just a phone call away. You may call, Mr. Shashi – 98673 15607, Mr. Suresh – 98200 61227or Mr. Dharmesh – 93222 79700 and further Bank details will be shared for funds transfer.
