With the appointment of Senior IPS Officer Deven Bharti as a Special’ Mumbai Police Commissioner, Mumbai Police rewrites History in having two Police Commissioners. It’s for the very first time Mumbai Police sees two Police Commissioners.

No doubt of the fact that Deven Bharti is a Senior IPS Officer and an hard task master known for tracking high-profile criminal cases. However, the Special Status given to Deven Bharti has created ripples in the Mumbai Police Force. appointment of Deven Bharti.

For the unversed, Deven Bharti, the 1994 batch IPS Officer had a close connect with Devendra Fadnavis while he was the State Chief Minister.

Earlier, Deven Bharti had held several prime assignments including Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Mumbai, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) in Mumbai, Chief of Anti-Terrorism Squad.

Notably, Senior IPS officer Vivek Phansalkar who is currently the Mumbai Police Commissioner, has four Joint Commissioners of Police working under him by looking after Law and Order, Administration, Crime, and Traffic.

Meanwhile, news comes to the fore that the role of the Special Commissioner of Police is yet to be specified.

Reportedly, while Devendra Fadnavis was the State Chief Minister between 2014-19 and held the Home department, which he continues as Dy.Chief Minister, Bharti was Joint Commissioner of Police in Mumbai and considered one of the most powerful police officers in the state. Thereafter he went on to he head the Anti-Terrorist Squad.

A new development thereafter emerged when Uddhav Thackeray led Maha Vikas Aghadi came to power. Deven Bharti was stripped of his plum post and inducted as Joint Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Security Corporation, which was considered to be a relatively insignificant posting.

All said the Mumbai Police Force are keeping their fingers crossed to foresee the new developments under the newly appointed ‘Special’Police Commissioner in Deven Bharti.
